Join us at Taylor Observatory SUNDAY NIGHT August 12
Admission Free – Donations Appreciated
Taylor Observatory will open at 8:30 for the Perseid meteor shower with observations from the Charles Nieman Star Deck. There will be a planetarium show and, tentatively, a short talk on meteors.
–Bring warm clothes and a lawn chair and/or blankets.
— Look generally in a little north of due East. The locus of the meteor shower – the constellation Perseus, is just below the familiar “W” of Cassiopeia, which is high in the sky all evening. Early meteors may be “earth grazers” but with peak rates at 11:00 pm and afterwards after moon set. Don’t look just directly at Perseus, as meteors are broadly distributed from due North to due East.
NOTES:
— Observe on your own Saturday night, which may also offer good observations.
Have a look at this:
—- The post “Fire Under Cassiopeia” on our Facebook Page “Friends of Taylor Observatory” received almost 12,000 views (normally we have about 300-600) The picture shows the Ranch Fire reflected in clouds of smoke with a second reflection into Clear Lake under the stars of the ENE Sky. See if you can spot the constellation Cassiopeia in the photo — that’s tricky because of so many stars in this 20-second time exposure photo taken from Kelseyville on the night of August 5.
NEXT WEEKEND:
The Window to the Universe program for August features popular Taylor Speaker Stephen Kane, who will update us with the latest on Volcanoes, local, terrestrial, and in space. We’ll also show videos of past volcanic eruptions in Iceland.
