“Upcoming NASA Missions Focusing on the Solar System and Beyond”
Presented by David Velasquez
and
A Celebration of “International Observe the Moon Night.”
Taylor Observatory, Saturday, October 20, 2018 – 8:00PM
Abstract: NASA continues to fund missions to explore both our solar system neighbors, near and far and the earth itself. This talk will describe new or recently-launched missions which target: our star, the sun; asteroids, to better understand the origins of the solar system; Mars, to better understand the makeup of the most-studied planet besides Earth; and the stars, looking for more exoplanets and using the largest telescope ever launched to get a more detailed view into the deep past.
Bio: David Velasquez has a degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of New Mexico and a Physics Ph.D. from the University of Rochester. Dr. Velasquez is a board member of the Friends of Taylor Observatory and serves as President of the Lake County Symphony.
Telescopic Observing Special Event: We’ll have Evelyn Norton’s original telescope on view, and hopefully operational for Lunar viewing on the Nieman Star Deck, along with new 18” Teeter Dobsonian.
