Goings On With The Sun
Prof. Phil Scherrer – Dept of Physics, Standford
Taylor Observatory, Saturday, September 15, 2018 – 8:00PM
Abstract: Currently there is much excitement in solar research with the pending arrival of NASA’s Parker Solar Probe and the activation of the new earth-based Daniel K. Inouye Solar Observatory in Hawaii. Phil will describe these facilities and update us on current solar research at Stanford. This is Prof. Scherrer’s third Taylor Lecture, and we welcome him with much enthusiasm.
Bio: Prof. Scherrer’s research interests are in Solar Physics, in particular the impact of our Sun’s activity on the earth. Phil is Research Professor in the Dept. of Physics at Stanford, and Senior Fellow at the Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory.
Telescopic Observing: From the Nieman Star Deck, six planets are visible, including Neptune. We may catch a spectacularly bright flare from the Iridium 55 satellite at 7:49 PM, just before Prof. Scherrer’s lecture.
